VETERAN ESSAY

You will create an essay on issue 1332 of the Big issue: Still at War.  You will anaylyse the media language and media representations associated with the front cover.
As part of the essay you will need to discuss the social and politcal contexts which have lead to a rise in homelessness in overall and inparticular within the veteran community

You will also discuss how newspapers (right wing and Big Issue) vary in the way the represent homelessness.  As part of your arguments you are required to use Gerbners theory

In this addition of the big issue they have decided to base the topic on war veterans. This could be because the newspaper was published the week of remembrance day which is a day we remember the soldiers who have fought for our country and died whilst doing so.  On the front cover we see how it is presented in muted tones with a  bright green contrast and colourings of camouflage which can resemble army uniform. The headline is a capitalised bold sans serif font with a black and white contrast dissimilar to a confidential file. By the headline being called 'still at war' it could represent how so many retired veterans are still at war with themselves by battling mental illness for e.g PTSD ( post traumatic stress disorder). The article is also trying to highlight the importance of how many veterans are become homeless. Homeless charities estimate that around 7000 ex servicemen and women are desperate to try and find shelter and a home to live in.
The government has not seen this as a major issue and instead housed thousands of asylum seekers rather than are own wounded soldiers who have fought proudly for our country. Most reasons soldiers have become homeless are due to no faults of their own, by fighting for our own country many soldiers have given up the luxuries of a high income and developed serious mental issues which resulted in heavy drinking to self medicate, not being able to afford and provide for their families resulting in the world collapsing and no longer having a roof over their heads.

By the big issue being a left wing newspaper they have highlighted these issues and seen the importance of providing for their own country and making sure everyone is equal. By The Big Issue not being as popular as a newspaper like The daily mail (right wing) it can support Gerbners theory of how by a wider range of viewers reading the daily mail they are more susceptible to believing things they may read in The Daily Mail than they are The Big Issue. By these right wing papers and broadcasts being the more popular to read and being government swayed they tend to hide issues of violence more and how our world is a much darker place. This could explain why so many of our population know nothing of the homeless veterans and why left wing papers like The Big Issue want to publish it.

Furthermore, when then looking again at the Issue we see how they have managed to include a poppy onto the Masthead which again is a symbol for Remembrance Day. The reason the poppy had become so symbolic and connected to remembrance day was because when the fields started to grow back after the war on them grew only red poppies and the red was seen as blood that had been shed from wounded soldiers. When looking at the image of the soldier we see that his eyes has been covered by the coverline which can imply a hidden identity and unable to see the real world that is 'civilian life'.
