GTA - Characters
Nico - Presented as rough and a fighter by direct address and the way he is gesturing with his hands that could suggest he is ready for a fight or to box. The fact he is wearing fingerless gloves may portray him to be an owner motorcycle. He wears very dull coloured clothing and has a serious look on his face, this can be because people will take him more seriously.
Cherry- Presented as a sexualised character her name can have connotations to the colour red which can represent passion and lust, which is why her outfit choice may suggest that she looks like a hooker. By showing a lot more of her body it can suggest that she is vulnerable and could be portrayed as a prostitute and by an indirect mode of address it can create an enigma about what she may be staring at. In America it has been known that schools will not allow girls to reveal their shoulders as it can be seen in a sexualised way, by Cherry's top slipping down her shoulder it can show how this can be seen in a sexualised way.

Shot Composition -
Here are more extensive
descriptions of
Camera shots

MICRO – ELEMENTS relate to the following
CINEMATOGRAPHY
– (angle, composition, etc)
SOUND
EDITING (&
SPECIAL EFFECTS)
MISE EN SCENE
Enigma code- Mystery of a text, clues are dropped but no real answer is given. Enigmas within the narrative make the audience want to know more.
Diegetic
sound.
Sound whose source is visible on the
screen or whose source is implied to be present by the action of the
film:
voices of characters
sounds made by objects in the story
music represented as coming from
instruments in the story space ( = source music)
Diegetic sound is any sound presented as
originated from source within the film's world
Non Diegetic sound. Sound whose source is neither visible on the screen nor has been implied to be present in the action:
narrator's commentary
sound effects which is added for the
dramatic effect
mood music
Non-diegetic sound
is
represented as coming from the a source outside story space
Star Wars -
Sound- In this trailer, there were displays of both Diegetic and Non Diegetic, you could hear characters voices and the sounds displayed by planes ect. However there was also a voice over and towards the end was the typical star wars theme tune.
Extreme close up - shows the characters expression and the emotion he is portraying
Close up - shows the character in a bit more depth, includes his clothing and what they are possibly about to do.
Mid shot- shows part of an image but not the whole thing, audience doesn't know what could be happening in the left and right
Wide shot- shows the whole image and establishes the context and setting, here it shows how there is a war and you can see how there is buildings bing torn and burnt to the ground.
PART OF POST PRODUCTION PROCESS
The stage in the film-making process in
which sound and images are organised to construct an overall narrative.
It is how a film maker puts together and
considers cuts/cutting and applies transitions, special effects etc. to
communicate a narrative to an audience.
Remember that an audience is a non-active
participant who must understand a narrative through the editing, they can only
see what you show them.
Imagine a film or even a scene from a
film without any editing, it would be very interesting!
Shot reverse shot is when a shot goes
from shot A, shot B, shot A, shot B etc.
It goes continuously back and forth
between the 2 shots to show there is a connection between them
It is often used in conversations so you
see what both characters are saying
It is a form of eye-line matching if the
character is looking at someone and the next shot is what they look at
Eyeline Match
Shot A: character is looking off screen
Shot B: what character is looking at
Is a following shot that follows what
character is looking at, makes cuts smoother the audience expects the cut to
happen and is eager to see what happens next/what character sees.
Example,
a)A
person’s phone rings, she turns and looks in direction of phone
b)Close
up shot of phone ringing
Cross cutting
Technique of continuously alternating 2
or more scenes that often happen simultaneously (at same time) but in different
locations.
As they cross, pace gradually gets faster
and fast and
tension builds
Often the parallel scenes will intersect
to create a climax.
Special effects
B&w
–often
used to show memory or time period
Contrast – to
altar the lighting (or contrast = very light lights and dark darks sometimes
with memories
Colour - to add a colour filter to show a specific mood
Example ‘The ring’ – many scenes are very
blue-ish,
which show sterile/coldness etc.
Animation –
titles of shows or cartoons
CGI – computer
generated images (example = avatar, planet of apes, polar express)
Fast forward/slow motion – speeding
up or slowing down
footage Ghost
trail
– see
multiple actions (overlapped) to show someone drunk or on drugs
Blur – to
show un-clarity, or fuzzy memory/flashback
Mise en Scene
Camera work- Here we have a close up shot of the character Bagheera, it shows the detail of his fur and has an indirect mode of address. By him looking into the distance it portrays him to have a serious look about him and makes the audience wonder what he may be looking at. This creates the sense of enigma.
